THE GLOBAL YOUTH DEMOCRACY CAMPAIGN - LAUNCH DAY 2005 - OCTOBER 18th

On October 18th, LAUNCH DAY 2005 of the Global Youth Democracy Campaign, youth around the world began celebrating democracy by encouraging and inspiring young democracy activists to:

MOBILIZE to hold and participate in discussions, debates, rallies, educational campaigns, trainings, street-theater, etc. to promote democratic values and concepts!

EDUCATE youth and the larger community about the importance of human rights, transparency, civic participation and other important democratic principles;

RAISE AWARENESS of the positive contributions youth are making to democracy in the world; and

BUILD the YMD by getting more people involved!

While YMD members are active year-round, they rally each year on October 18th to celebrate the Campaign and organize activities that inform the media, engage decision-makers, and inspire the general public. Campaign activites include:
• Youth Forums for Democracy and Political Participation
• Meetings between youth and local government
• Opportunities for youth to speak out on democracy issues
• Letter-writing campaigns and lobbying days
• Rallies, candlelight vigils, and other peaceful demonstrations
• Street theater and concerts
• Workshops and conferences to develop strategy, network, share skills, and train each other
• Presentations at community meetings such as Bantaba forums, city council meetings or gatherings of religious groups
• School essay or art contests about corruption, human rights, political participation and other democracy issues
